Contractor adviceMy neighbor was told that adding a layer of wood flooring could crush the foundation and needed $70,000 of reinforcement. She almost said yes.
Renovation decisionA friend was remodeling his bathroom when something didn’t look right. The contractor said it was fine: they would waterproof it and move on.
Water intrusionA homeowner noticed water stains forming around a window. The obvious solution? Caulk everything up. But sometimes the caulk is part of the problem.
Sometimes, all it takes is a second opinion.

Code & Permit
“We were renovating our kitchen and our contractor said we didn’t need a plumbing permit. I asked Zuoda, and he said nine times out of ten, if you’re relocating water or gas lines, you do. But that doesn’t necessarily mean drawings or a complicated process. Sometimes it’s just an administrative application. We checked with the township, and he was right. We got the permit and avoided a much bigger headache later.”

Material & Tactile Judgment
“We kept getting water in one corner of our basement and noticed a few small cracks nearby. I asked Zuoda what was going on. He walked me through where the water was likely coming from and three different ways people might try to fix it: sealing from the inside, adding interior drainage, or addressing it from the exterior. I had no idea all three could be sold as ‘waterproofing’ even though they solve the problem very differently. That conversation probably saved me from just hiring the first waterproofing company that gave me a quote.”

Contractor Practices
“Our contractor was installing new step flashing where the shingle roof meets the vinyl siding, and something just looked off. I Googled it but still couldn’t tell if it was actually wrong. I sent Zuoda a few photos, and he explained how step flashing is supposed to work and pointed out what wasn’t being done properly. I went back to the contractor knowing exactly what to ask and what needed to change. It was a completely different conversation.”
